july 2021 goals

I can’t believe it’s almost July already! This year has really flown by and I’m going to start sharing my language goals here as a reminder to myself of what I plan to achieve by the end of the month.

Japanese

  • Kanji – aim for level 11/12 on WaniKani – I’m averaging a level every 8-ish days as long as I keep on top of my reviews, so 11 would be worst case scenario, 12 best case scenario. I’m trying not to use too many different methods for kanji revision so I’m only going to use WaniKani.
  • Reading – I started コンビニ人間 in June and as this is still a difficult read for me I don’t necessarily plan to finish this month. I’ll aim to but if I don’t I’m not going to beat myself up about it! I also want to finish reading the first volume of 僕のおまわりさん and これは経費で落ちません (I leave a lot unfinished…) before starting anything new in August.
  • Listening – I would like to start watching the news daily, replacing watching the local news. I tend to watch Japanese news only when I have time at the weekend but it would be great practice to listen daily. I also want to start watching a new drama – when I decide I will post about it here since I want to start writing reviews!
  • Writing – I want to start a notebook where I only write in Japanese and start using the kanji and grammar I know, plus it would be a good break from my screen. Also, writing reviews of the material I read, in a mixture of English and Japanese in Notion.
  • Speaking – I’ll continue with my iTalki conversation practice and my regular lessons, but I’m going to try speaking to myself in the week and recording myself. I don’t plan to show these to anyone except for my future self but I want to speak more on the days I don’t have anything planned.

Korean

  • Enrol for a beginner class! I know the class I want to join and enrolment opens in July for a late August start date, so this is all I plan on doing, plus going over hangeul and basic Korean phrases.
  • Find a Korean drama to watch and just enjoy it, no stressing over subtitles because my Korean is too beginner to even worry about it! I have a few on my watchlist so I’ll decide later.

French

  • My current class (A1.1 part 2) ends tomorrow (1st July) and I am already enrolled on A1.2 part 1, so I guess I’ll just continue! The classes are all online so I have no excuses, plus I’m finding the pace pretty good due to previous knowledge of French.
  • Watch Amelie! I had this on VHS back when it came out and I recently bought the DVD since I love it and wanted to see it again. I’ll try without subtitles but I’ll probably have to turn them on since my French sucks these days.
  • Find native French resources to enjoy.

Other

  • Plan for another #minimmersionweekend – I’m planning to have a Japanese weekend again (10-11th) since I don’t want to try and break it up into different languages, and I have a rough plan of how my days will go. I have two Japanese lessons on day 2 so I’ve at least got speaking sorted, but no Japanese snacks planned this time as my London trip has been cancelled, so no trip to the Japanese supermarket. I always plan for Japanese food so I’ll have to think of something else!
  • Write here more! I love writing and even if no one else sees it I will continue writing since it’s another hobby I enjoy.

July is also my birthday month so I’m also looking forward to celebrating, seeing the end of lockdown (fingers crossed!) and getting some normality back! My June ended up pretty awful with the exception of celebrating my second wedding anniversary (lots of good food and wine), so here’s to a better July.
