drama review: ossan’s love

I’m very late to the Ossan’s Love party but now that I’ve watched it I just have to share my love for it!

Ossan’s Love is a drama about a real estate agent called Haruta who is unlucky in love and in work – his last relationship was years ago and he can’t get the same levels of sales as his colleagues. To make matters worse, he is super lazy, lives at home with his mother and is always being scolded for coming home late and drunk. So when his mother suddenly moves out he is left to fend for himself.

However, this is the least of his concerns as he discovers that his boss, Kurosawa, is secretly in love with him and has been for the last ten years! This makes for some hilarious scenes, and Haruta’s reactions to everything are over the top and exaggerated. A new colleague, Maki, also joins the team after transferring, and as he needs somewhere to live he moves in with Haruta. Turns out, Maki is also harbouring a crush on Haruta and now Haruta is stuck in a very strange love triangle. But, Haruta, in his own words, loves ‘lolitas with big breasts’! He is not interested in men and now he has two men literally fighting over him.

This is the first BL drama I’ve watched (I’ve only seen one BL anime before) and I loved the story. In particular I liked that Haruta was open minded about dating a man, and the relationship developed in a way that was more natural (I won’t give the ending away!). I felt like he came to love the one he ended with because he loved them as a person, rather than what gender they were. I think that’s how relationships should work, rather than feeling like you should love someone because you should or are expected to. The cast of characters also had their own problems, like Haruta’s childhood friend whose feelings for him change as the story progresses, or Kurosawa’s wife who finds herself divorced and trying to deal as a single woman.

I would definitely, 1000% watch this again! In fact I do plan to as I want to watch with Japanese subtitles and pick out any vocabulary and phrases I’d like to learn. I will probably still laugh at the funny moments and cry at the ending (if it’s a happy or sad ending it doesn’t matter, I will still cry!), and this is genuinely one of the best dramas I’ve watched lately. If you want something that will give you all the emotions then I recommend Ossan’s Love! I would also like my own version of Maki to make delicious Japanese food everyday, but I can keep dreaming…

I know there is an SP episode that I am yet to watch, but I’m intentionally not watching it just yet, so I can enjoy it without rushing into it. There’s also a sequel that is a completely different story but again features Haruta and Kurosawa, so that will be interesting to watch.

If you made it this far, thank you for reading! I’m going to posting reviews as I finish dramas so there should be more coming. 🙂
