The July basho has just ended and I couldn’t be happier for this man – one of my favourite rikishi, Terunofuji!

He didn’t win BUT he only lost to the current sole yokozuna, Hakuho (the most successful sumo wrestler with 45 championship victories), with an impressive 14-1 record. With his past three performances also containing two championship wins he was able to be promoted. Usually this wouldn’t raise any eyebrows but after knee injuries he was demoted all the way down from ozeki (second highest ranking) to jonidan division, and despite wanting to retire he was denied, and after recovering continued working hard and amazingly made it back into makuuchi division. He quickly regained his ozeki rank and now yokozuna. It really is an amazing comeback story of sinking to the bottom and rising all the way to the top, and now he will be come the 73rd yokozuna.
おめでとう、照ノ富士!
